5th Revision of the Sphere Manual 2026–2028

Presentation

The Sphere Handbook is the longest-standing initiative in the field of humanitarian standards. It has been field-tested for some 30 years and is regularly updated to continue meeting its objectives in a constantly evolving world. What has never changed are the rights on which it is based: the handbook recognizes the right of individuals to assistance, a dignified life, protection, security, and full participation in decisions concerning their own recovery.

Why is the Handbook being revised again?

Since the Handbook was last revised in 2018, the humanitarian landscape has changed considerably. Climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, evolving conflict dynamics, and the emergence of new operational risks have profoundly transformed humanitarian action. Feedback from across the sector confirms the need for a review. To remain relevant, practical, and effective, Sphere’s minimum standards must now be updated by the humanitarian community to better protect the dignity of people affected by crises.

How to participate?

The revision process relies on broad mobilization across the entire sector. We invite Sphere users, members, focal points, trainers, technical experts, and partners to contribute in several ways:

Join us!

We are looking for experienced individuals to fill the following roles:

We are seeking experts for the following technical chapters:

  • Food Security
  • Health
  • Nutrition
  • Shelter and Habitat
  • Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

We are also seeking expertise for the core chapters:

  • Humanitarian Charter
  • Protection Principles
  • Core Humanitarian Standard on Quality and
  • Accountability (CHS)
  • We are coordinating this work with the Global Clusters and greatly appreciate your suggestions, including names and contact information.

Proposing Cross-Cutting Themes:

In addition to the core chapters, the revision will establish a list of cross-cutting themes to reflect interconnected risks and operational realities.

Previously, these themes have included: gender and gender-based violence (GBV); the inclusion of persons with disabilities; Mental health and psychosocial support (MHSPP); urban contexts; climate and the environment; cash transfers and markets; and accountability and learning.

What persistent or emerging issues should the next Handbook address in this way?

About the Geneva Health Forum

Established in 2006 by the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) and the University of Geneva (UNIGE), the Geneva Health Forum (GHF) is a Swiss not-for-profit initiative that brings together a diverse range of stakeholders to discuss and address global health challenges.

The GHF plays a pivotal role in the global health landscape, as a neutral and inclusive platform, fostering dialogue and collaboration among key players in the field, including policymakers, representatives from academia, civil society, and the private sector.

Its core mission is to facilitate constructive dialogue among these global health actors, which, in turn, contributes to the improvement of health policies and access to care worldwide. The Geneva Health Forum proudly collaborates with some of the most prominent international organizations based in Geneva.
