WHA High-Level Dialogue on Healthy Indoor Air

Presentation

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vital role of indoor air quality. Since we spend about 90% of our lives indoors, exposure to pollutants can affect our health, productivity, and performance far beyond pandemic concerns.

In this context, the Geneva Health Forum, part of the Institute of Global Health (IGH) at the University of Geneva, organized the first WHO Europe Indoor Air Conference, followed by a second in Paris. The Forum is continuing its international initiative, “Improving indoor air quality: a public health issue”. This project brings together a high-level, multidisciplinary group of experts with the goal of developing a policy brief and a draft resolution on healthy indoor air. These documents will
be presented at key events in Rome, Vienna, and Berlin to highlight the necessity of concrete public health strategies aimed at combating airborne diseases and improving indoor air quality.

Additionally, the aim is to adopt a World Health Assembly (WHA) Resolution on Healthy Indoor Air to recognize indoor air quality as a global public health concern. This Resolution will subsequently inform and guide evidence-based strategies and actions.

Air Club is a global coalition of indoor air quality champions working to make indoor air healthy. Air Club launched the Global Pledge for Healthy Indoor Air at United Nations Headquarters in New York in September 2025. The Global Pledge is the first international commitment to formally recognize clean indoor air as fundamental for protecting health and safeguarding well-being. France and
Montenegro are the first two countries to sign, alongside 250 other signatories – global health groups, advocacy organizations, universities, schools, research organizations and aligned businesses – from over 25 countries.

Objectives

Air Club and the Geneva Health Forum are joining forces, combining their expertise to organize the World Health Assembly High-Level dialogue on Healthy Indoor Air in May 2026.

This dialogue will:

About the Geneva Health Forum

Established in 2006 by the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) and the University of Geneva (UNIGE), the Geneva Health Forum (GHF) is a Swiss not-for-profit initiative that brings together a diverse range of stakeholders to discuss and address global health challenges.

The GHF plays a pivotal role in the global health landscape, as a neutral and inclusive platform, fostering dialogue and collaboration among key players in the field, including policymakers, representatives from academia, civil society, and the private sector.

Its core mission is to facilitate constructive dialogue among these global health actors, which, in turn, contributes to the improvement of health policies and access to care worldwide. The Geneva Health Forum proudly collaborates with some of the most prominent international organizations based in Geneva.
